Athlete Profile – Tom Apedaile

Tom always wers some great shirts!!

Tell us about yourself…
I grew up in Richmond and there I lived (on the same street) until I moved to Philadelphia PA where I served my mission. I graduated from USU with a dual degree in Math and Physics and I’m currently working on my masters in Math. I am one of those types that love what I do with a passion. I’m rather introverted but start talking to me about math or physics, and I’ll talk your ear off (just ask anybody that has asked me about either subject).

What’s your day job?
I teach a math class each semester at USU and I work on my masters project.

How where you introduced to CrossFit?
My parents, John and Chris Apedaile, kept bugging me to try it until I eventually gave in.

What’s your favorite WOD or Lift?
WOD: Either Helen or Cindy
Lift: Power Cleans

What’s your favorite skill/movement that you have learned at CrossFit IoTA?
Pull-ups or Box jumps (despite what my shins may indicate)

How has CrossFit changed your life?
I am more fit than I have ever been in my life (any comparison is laughable). I am much more self confident in my fitness abilities and this confidence has leaked into many other areas of my life.

What keeps you motivated and coming back for more?
1) Someday, I will beat my dad in a workout. I don’t much care what WOD it is, or when it happens so long as I get one.
2) Every time I finally figure out a movement, or up my weights on the bar for a lift. It’s an awesome feeling!

What’s something you know now that you wish someone would have said to you when you started CrossFit? I was told a great many good things, I just wish I would have listened! (for instance, eating food ACTUALLY makes or breaks your performance)

One word to describe me would be… Nerd

I have always wanted… a dinosaur like a Dimetrodon or Deinonychus. (I never truly grew out of my childhood fascination with dinosaurs)

Outside of the gym, I like to… Read, camp, watch movies, play video games, go shooting, rock climbing, cook (especially Dutch Ovens)

Three things you would always find in my fridge… Milk, eggs, cheese

Something nobody knows about me or would be surprised to know about me…
I was a terrible, frustrating student before late High School and math was the subject I struggled with the most. I took Calculus in HS with the sole intention of getting math out of my life forever; and now I’m getting my degree in math.

Favorite physical activities outside of CFI… Rock climbing, Ultimate Frisbee, hiking, etc.

John, Cody, Thomas and Tod this week at the SLC Airport welcoming home Cody from his mission.

Favorite place to eat in Cache Valley… LD’s or Angies

Songs that get me pumped up for a workout: Meaning of Life (Disturbed), Liar (Korn), Sick of Life (Godsmack)

The last thing I ate was… Two tuna sandwiches, half a bell pepper, and two cheesesticks

My proudest accomplishment is… Graduating cum laud with degrees in Math and Physics

My six month goal is… Double unders (I would be happy with finally getting some)

My favorite workout attire is… My only pair of basketball shorts, t-shirt (which I usually lose fairly quickly), and my Inov8 shoes.

My favorite workout partner(s): Jesse Johnson, Casey Peterson, and/or my dad. They all help me pace and push myself which is exactly what I need.

If you created a WOD and named it after yourself, what would the workout be?
“Geek”
20 min AMRAP
5 Man-makers (135\95)
15 box jumps (24\20)
200m run
